The Sharon Whelan Memorial Fellowship has been established by the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR) to commemorate the life and work of Sharon Whelan, a key contributor to the development of the Association over a span of 25 years. Sharon joined IARC in 1974 and became a scientific staff member of the Unit of Descriptive Epidemiology (DEP), working under the supervision of Dr Calum Muir (1981-1986) and then Dr Max Parkin (1986-2004). As well as a co-editor of Cancer Incidence in Five Continents from Volumes V (1987) through to VIII (2002), Sharon was the person responsible for the successful operation of the IACR during this period, becoming Executive Secretary in later years, until her retirement in 2005.
The Fellowship is inspired by Sharon’s contribution and support to the cancer registry community over a quarter century, and by the longstanding Fellowships associated with Dr Muir and with Dr Constance Percy, both pioneers in cancer registration worldwide in their own right.

Eligibility
The Sharon Whelan Memorial Fellowship is open to persons working in the field of cancer registration in any part of the world. Priority will be given, where possible, to the staff of registries where local resources are limited. The fund is administered by the Secretariat of the IACR.
